Before & After
Before the surgery…
A thorough workup with blood tests is going to be made before the operation. A nutritionist, anesthetist, and a general surgeon are going to examine the patient. Gastroscopy imaging is going to be performed by the general surgeon.
Obesity surgeon will select the surgery technique and schedule the operation based on the results of the workup and consultations.
- At least 15 days before the operation, patients should discontinue the use of drugs such as vitamin E, blood thinners, and ibrufen. The patient should inform the physician about the other medications he or she receives.
- Patients should avoid smoking and using any tobacco products before the operation. The habit of smoking adversely affects blood circulation, thus reducing the success rate of surgery. Wound healing is delayed and problems associated with anesthesia may occur.
- If the patient is pregnant, surgery must be postponed to a later time.
- From the night before the surgery, patients should stop eating. They should take their essential medications with little water before.
- Patients should not use alcohol; they should not spray apply any cosmetic products on their hair, and they should not wear any makeup.
The operation
- On the day of surgery, the patient is taken to the operating room.
- The intervention involves a laparoscopic procedure lasting approximately 1-1.5 hours.
- After the operation, the patient will stay in the hospital for 3-4 days.
After the surgery…
When the effect of anesthesia ceases after the surgery, patients may experience mild pain that can be managed with simple painkillers.
The patient may get back to his or her social life after being discharged from the hospital at the end of a 3 or 4-day hospital stay. However, he or she is allowed to engage in workouts and get back to work after approximately 1-2 weeks following the surgery.
Regular follow-up visits will be scheduled for the patient to attend after the surgery so that the contents of his or her diet will be revised based on the results of general check-outs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can be an eligible candidate for obesity surgery?
- If your body mass index is 35 or over and if you suffer from significant health problems due to obesity, including high blood pressure or diabetes;
- If you are unsuccessful in losing weight despite your efforts with diet and workouts, which you have kept complying with for 6 months to 1 year;
- If you are between 18 and 65 years of age, and if your body mass index is 40 or more, you may be a candidate for obesity surgery.
Does the gastric bypass surgery cause pain postoperatively?
Since abdominal muscles and membranes are not resected during the laparoscopic intervention, no serious pain occurs after the surgery. Painkillers are given to the patient in the postoperative period.
Our patients are able to walk on the evening of the day of surgery and pain will considerably diminish on the second postoperative day. The patient may experience tension and pressure on the first day, which is relieved by painkillers.
Will There Be Any Scar Marks After Gastric Bypass?
Since the operation is performed using a closed method, only very small incision marks will be present in the abdominal region after the intervention. These marks will become completely invisible in a few months.
How Much Weight Loss Is Achieved?
Individuals undergoing gastric bypass lose 65-70% of their excess weight during the approximately 5 years after the surgery. In order to prevent weight gain after the surgery, it is of major importance that the individuals undergoing gastric bypass should be followed-up closely as recommended by experts.
When will it be possible after the surgery to lose the problematic excess weight?
Weight loss starts immediately after the gastric bypass and continues for a long time.
Is it possible that the patient will gain weight and return to previous body weight?
The statistics show that many morbidly obese patients lose weight with these surgeries and have never put on weights further. The risk of putting on weight will always be minimal if the patient adheres to the necessary lifestyle changes.
Is obesity surgery reversible?
The changes made by these types of operations are planned to be permanent. Reversal of the modifications will increase the risk of weight gain in these patients.
Will I have to lose weight before the surgery?
Your doctor may ask you to follow a special diet program for 2 weeks before the surgery. This can be a solely fluid food containing diet. This will help you lose weight and familiarize yourself with the type of fluid diet you will need to follow after surgery.
